WHAT IS A DARK SKY CITY?
A dark-sky city must have very low levels of light pollution to be certified by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).
This means that the night sky should be dark and clear enough to allow for stargazing and to preserve the natural beauty of the night sky.
Sedona is one of many cities worldwide that has achieved this status, thanks to its commitment to protecting its night skies.
DEFINITION OF A DARK SKY CITY
A Dark Sky City is a designation given to a community that has committed to reducing light pollution and protecting the night sky.
Since 2001, the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has been giving out Dark Sky City designations to cities that have reduced their light pollution and are committed to preserving the beauty of the night sky.
In 2014, the IDA designated Sedona, Arizona, as one of these dark-sky cities, making Sedona an excellent destination for stargazing.
BENEFITS OF A DARK SKY CITY
Dark Sky Cities provide a unique opportunity for people to experience the beauty of the night sky in its undiluted form.
Having a dark sky designation means that light pollution is minimized and the night sky is kept as dark as possible. Dark sky cities also provide the opportunity to see celestial objects in their full glory. For example, I’m often asked “Can You See the Milky Way in Sedona?”
With a designation as an International Dark Sky Community, Sedona offers all these benefits and more!
IS SEDONA AZ A DARK SKY CITY?
Yes, Sedona AZ is a dark-sky city!
In December 2012, the City Council made it one of the top priorities to become an International Dark-Sky Community.
As a result of their efforts, the International Dark-Sky Association made Sedona one of only twenty certified dark sky communities in the world. With its designation, Sedona is now one of the best cities for stargazing.
The city is perfect for stargazing at almost any time of the year, except around July and August when cloud cover can be more frequent.
SEDONA’S DARK SKY DESIGNATION
Sedona is one of only 20 certified Dark Sky Communities worldwide. It is the sixth in Arizona to receive the prestigious designation from the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).
The IDA recognized Sedona’s efforts to preserve this essential natural resource and awarded the city its designation. With its dark night sky, Sedona is an ideal destination for stargazers looking for stunning nightscapes.
WHY SEDONA EARNED THE DESIGNATION
It is no surprise that Sedona has become a Dark Sky City.
The city has always gone above and beyond to ensure a better future for its citizens and visitors, and the preservation of its night sky is no exception.
The IDA designated Flagstaff as the world’s first dark-sky city in 2001. In total, there are now six such communities in Arizona:
- Flagstaff
- Sedona
- Big Park (Village of Oak Creek)
- Cottonwood
- Fountain Hills
- Thunder Mountain Pootseev Nightsky
THE BENEFITS OF DARK SKY CITIES
Sedona’s commitment to protecting its natural dark skies has been rewarded with a special designation from the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).
The IDA is the leading organization dedicated to promoting the protection of dark night skies worldwide, and its designation of Sedona as an International Dark-Sky Community is a testament to the city’s dedication to preserving its night sky.
