DARK SKY MAP CALIFORNIA
The Light Pollution Map California is a sky chart that shows the darkest areas in the state of California. The Dark Sky California Map makes it easy for us stargazers to find the best spots for celestial viewing.
The map shows the levels of light pollution in different areas, with darker areas indicating lower levels of light pollution.
It allows you to quickly find the darkest areas in California and plan your stargazing activities accordingly.
The California Light Pollution Map uses data on light pollution levels collected by satellite and ground-based observations using the Sky Quality Meter. This data reveals a map that shows the distribution of light pollution across the state.

WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE MILKY WAY IN CALIFORNIA?
The Milky Way is visible in California year-round, but the best time to see it depends on several factors, including the moon’s phase and the location of the galaxy in the sky.
The best time to view the Milky Way in California is from April to August, when the galaxy is highest in the sky, and the weather is warm and clear.
During these months, the Milky Way is visible in the southern part of the sky, and you can see it from most locations in the state.
From November to April, the Milky Way is lower in the sky and may be less visible, although you can still see it from some locations.
It is vital to choose a location with dark skies and to avoid light pollution as much as possible to get the best views of the Milky Way.

California has four official Dark Sky Places.

DARK SKY MAP USA
I’ve included a US light pollution map for the contiguous USA to help you see California in context.
This US dark sky map shows the levels of light pollution across the country. The eastern half of the United States tends to have higher light pollution levels than the western half. The higher population density and urbanization in the eastern states result in more artificial light in the night sky.
However, it is necessary to note that light pollution levels can vary significantly within individual states and even within different regions of the same state.
For example, there may be specific locations that are relatively dark and offer good stargazing opportunities despite a state’s overall high levels of light pollution. The light pollution map United States is a good place to start.
